In his highly anticipated One Championship debut, Mohammad Fahmi demonstrated his incredible resilience and skill, securing a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Antonio Bushev. Fighting in the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Thailand, Fahmi marked his first appearance on the big stage and represented his home country of Iran with distinction.
From the opening bell, Fahmi's wrestling prowess was evident as he relentlessly sought to control the fight. Despite encountering some resistance early on, he eventually succeeded in taking Bushev down and maintaining dominance throughout the bout. His effective grappling ensured that he remained ahead on the scorecards, even as Bushev attempted to mount a comeback with powerful strikes.
"My original plan was to take him down in the second round, but I realized early on it would be better to do it right from the start. When I saw that he had good takedown defense, I switched my approach and started using more movement. He began kicking me in a bad way, so I had to adjust again and go back to focusing on the takedown. I actually had three different game plans, and I ended up changing my approach in the middle of the round."
This bout held special significance for Fahmi, as it was his inaugural experience with One Championship and a chance to fight on a globally recognized platform. Antonio Bushev came into the bout with a record of 3-1, hailing from Bulgaria. If there were any pre-fight nerves, Fahmi didn't show them as he displayed his technical abilities and composure, further proving his potential as he extended his unbeaten record to 4-0.
"I didn’t care about anything except winning the match. The crowd didn’t matter to me. I just kept telling myself, 'This is the end of the line, just do your best.' That’s all I focused on."
As Fahmi continues to climb the ranks, fans can look forward to seeing him represent Iran on the world stage with the same drive and excellence that defined his One Championship debut.
"It was fantastic. It was good atmosphere, so many people. It was like a complete arena. It was a big difference from what I fought before but I enjoy this environment very much and I am ready for bigger than this one also."
